The City of Cheyenne and Cheyenne Metropolitan Planning Organization are working on two dual planning efforts to enhance the community’s walking environment. The Cheyenne Metropolitan Area Safe Routes to School Plan will identify pedestrian infrastructure projects and supporting programs for the 24 elementary schools and 3 junior high schools serving 30 square miles of the Cheyenne urbanized area. The Plan is intended to improve pedestrian safety for children walking to and from school, while also encouraging more students to give walking a try. More than 9,500 children enrolled in the school district will benefit from this Plan.
Meanwhile, the Cheyenne Metropolitan Area Pedestrian Plan will look at pedestrian issues and improvement opportunities on a broader scale. The Plan will lay out short- and long-term strategies to make walking a safe, convenient, and attractive travel mode. The document will contain a list of recommended projects such as sidewalk connections and intersection improvements, and discuss potential project funding sources.
The vast majority of residents living within one mile of Cheyenne city limits are less than five miles from downtown shopping and employment centers, and are within walking distance of local neighborhood centers and commercial establishments. By offering recreational opportunities and convenient commuting alternatives, an enhanced pedestrian environment can improve the quality of life for Cheyenne residents while also conserving natural resources and maintaining good air quality.
Through a combination of engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation strategies, Cheyenne will increase the number of children and adults who choose to walk to school, work, and other community destinations.
The Project Team has completed the Draft Cheyenne Metropolitan Safe Routes to School Plan, which is now available for download. The plan document is a large file, so a high speed internet connection is recommended.
The Team is now in the process of finalizing the Draft Cheyenne Area Pedestrian Plan.
